Kusama Migration – Trust Wallet Issues

GM everyone,

The Kusama Asset Hub migration happened on October 7th, and whilst at Nova Wallet, we ensured that users received a seamless transition; the same cannot be said for all wallets that previously supported the Kusama Relay Chain.

Some Kusama token holders are experiencing issues with Trust Wallet. The issue stems from the fact that Trust Wallet did not support the Kusama Asset Hub migration. This means that users who were using Trust Wallet can no longer see their KSM token balances, as they now exist on a chain that is not supported by Trust Wallet.

I hope that this post explains the situation clearly for non-technical users, along with providing an update on how Nova Wallet will help users who are currently facing these issues.

Forced Derivation Paths & Simple Migration

A common issue that users of Trust Wallet face is that Trust Wallet, by default, uses derivation paths for accounts. This means that when users attempt to migrate to a new wallet, using their passphrase, they will not be able to see their token balances.

For those who are not familiar with derivation paths, you can think of them as an extension of your passphrase. Users must correctly input their passphrase and the correct derivation path to access the underlying account. This means that if a user inputs their passphrase, but without the correct derivation path, they will see a completely different account.

This is the issue that Trust Wallet users are facing on Kusama. This issue has been reported to us by some users since the migration, and we understand the frustration that this is causing.

Here’s a video I made going over derivation paths. It’s in the context of Polkadot Vault, but it’s still relevant for anyone who is having a hard time understanding derivation paths: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WAnX4n5xoMY

Nova’s Plans

When we released Nova Wallet v10.2 in August, we added a migration feature that allows users to easily make the move from Trust Wallet to Nova Wallet.

When a user selects this method, Nova Wallet automatically inputs the derivation path that Trust Wallet uses by default for Polkadot. This is a huge UX win for these users and significantly reduces the technical overhead for them (most of them do not know or need to know what derivation paths are).

Unfortunately, some KSM token holders are reporting to us that this migration method is not working for their Kusama accounts. Upon investigating this issue, we have identified that Trust Wallet uses a different default derivation path for Kusama than it does for Polkadot.

We will update the Trust Wallet migration feature in the near future to ensure that users migrating their Kusama accounts can once again access their funds on Kusama Asset Hub.

Thanks to all of the users who reported this issue to us – we will make sure that this issue is fixed for you as soon as possible.

To the Polkadot & Kusama community, please feel free to share this forum post with any users who are facing this issue.

Have a great weekend, everyone.

Thx a lot for the explanation !! Very interesting.

Thx for your this article , I also had the same problem (Kusama not shown in trust wallet and not shown in Nova too ).

Will the next Nova version be released this year to solve the ksm balance display in Nova?
