Ink! Dev Hub Final Report

Hello Polkadot Builders and the whole Polkadot community,

The teams behind the ink! Dev Hub — Astar Network, Aleph Zero, Phala Network — are proud to present the Final Report of the first iteration of the ink! Dev Hub.

About the ink! Dev Hub

ink! Dev Hub is the initiative, funded by the Polkadot Treasury — the first ink! Dev Hub treasury proposal was successfully accepted in September 2023. Since then Astar Network, Aleph Zero and Phala Network have joined forces to enhance ink! smart contract development within the Polkadot and Kusama ecosystems. To achieve this, during the past 6 months we have been dedicating a substantial amount of our resources to the development of the Swanky and Drink! tools:

Swanky Suite aims to bridge the gap in WASM smart contract development tools by offering features specifically tailored for the Substrate ecosystem;

Drink! supports ink! development with a minimal Substrate runtime library and a user-friendly drink-cli command line tool with TUI.

At the same time, we have been focusing on creating examples, tutorials and documentation to extend the knowledge base for the ink! developers, and thus lower existing entry barriers into the ecosystem.

Moreover, outside the scope of the technical roadmap, all participating teams are proudly representing the interests of the ink! community — we actively engage in discussions about the future of ink! and Wasm with the external stakeholders interested in joining the ecosystem, and support the teams during the course of their development.

Our Mission

The mission of the ink! Dev Hub is to facilitate and streamline ink! smart contract development within the Polkadot and Kusama ecosystems.

Having profound expertise and valuable insights into the challenges and prospects of the ink! smart contract development, we strive to contribute to the growth of the Polkadot ecosystem by enhancing the development of more secure, efficient, and developer-friendly ink! smart contract tools, and thus making the ecosystem more accessible and attractive to developers.

Teams’ extensive background allows us to understand and address the challenges faced by real users, and as a result enhance their experience. By prioritizing user-centricity, we design and advance solutions that reflect community needs, striving to create an environment where these solutions are not only efficient but also intuitive.

First Iteration Roundup

Around 90% of the initially defined tasks have been completed in the timely manner. Some of the tasks have been omitted as a result of the ecosystem and community needs analysis and community feedback, since our approach is transparency and we are dedicated to build the tools based on the community needs based. Since we have chosen a delivery-based funding approach, we have adjusted the final funding amount accordingly. You can find all the links attached at the end of the post.
