AfriCycle: Africa’s Blockchain-Powered Circular Economy on Polkadot

I’m Jimoh Nasihudeen from Nigeria, a blockchain engineer and entrepreneur focused on real-world impact in Africa. I started building AfriCycle even before joining the Polkadot Blockchain Academy (Cohort 7, Bali), where I later honed my skills in building scalable, interoperable solutions using toolings in the Polkadot ecosystem. I’m now an alumni of the Academy.

I’ve been driving AfriCycle’s development solo so far, but I’m open to collaborators passionate about ReFi, circular economies, or blockchain in Africa whether you’re a developer, strategist, marketer, or just excited about sustainable tech for emerging markets.


The Challenge: Africa’s Waste Crisis and the Global Disconnect

Africa generates over 125 million tons of municipal solid waste annually, with projections rising to 244 million tons by 2025 due to rapid urbanization and population growth. Yet, collection rates hover around 40-70% in many cities, leaving millions of tons uncollected and contributing to environmental degradation, health risks, and lost economic opportunities.

Informal waste workers often called “waste pickers” or “recyclers” are the backbone of recycling in African urban areas, handling up to 80% of recyclable materials in cities like Lagos, Nairobi, and Kampala. These workers, numbering in the millions across the continent, operate in precarious conditions: low incomes (often less than $2/day), lack of formal recognition, exposure to hazards, and exclusion from financial systems. Despite their critical role, they remain invisible to global markets, unable to access incentives or prove their contributions.

Meanwhile, the global carbon credit market is exploding, projected to reach USD 4,734.35 billion by 2030 as corporations and governments ramp up net-zero commitments. ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) investing is similarly booming, with trillions in assets under management seeking verifiable impact data. However, these markets suffer from a data gap: unreliable or absent metrics from emerging economies like Africa, where informal sectors dominate. This disconnect means waste workers can’t monetize their efforts, and global initiatives overlook high-impact, grassroots opportunities for carbon sequestration and circular economy growth.

Key pain points include:

  • Economic exclusion: Informal workers lack access to fair pay, DeFi tools, or financial inclusion.
  • Data silos: Unverified recycling activities can’t generate credible proof for carbon credits or ESG reporting.
  • Scalability barriers: Fragmented local systems fail to connect with international protocols, limiting growth.
  • Environmental toll: Unmanaged waste leads to methane emissions (a potent greenhouse gas) and pollution, exacerbating climate change.

AfriCycle bridges this gap by formalizing informal recycling through blockchain, creating a verifiable, incentivized ecosystem that turns waste into wealth.


AfriCycle: Blockchain-Powered Circular Economy for Africa

AfriCycle is Africa’s first ReFi (Regenerative Finance) platform dedicated to the circular economy, empowering informal waste workers with tools to earn, verify, and scale their impact. Using blockchain, we transform everyday recycling into on-chain assets that unlock global opportunities.

Core features:

  • Verifiable Rewards System: Waste workers use a mobile PWA to log collections via simple uploads . Verified actions earn stablecoin rewards, providing immediate financial incentives and building a pathway to DeFi.

  • On-Chain Proof-of-Waste: Each collection generates tamper-proof data on the blockchain, serving as “proof-of-waste” for carbon credit minting, ESG certifications, and supply chain traceability.

  • Custom Substrate Pallet: Built natively on Polkadot for secure handling of verification logic, reward issuance, and data storage ensuring efficiency and low costs.

  • XCM-Enabled Interoperability: Seamless cross-chain transfers via Polkadot’s XCM protocol, linking AfriCycle to stablecoin parachains (e.g., for USDC payouts), ReFi ecosystems, and carbon market platforms.

This isn’t just theory it’s ReFi in practice, aligning local sustainability with global finance to create regenerative cycles of value.


Traction & Proof-of-Concept: Real Results on the Ground

We didn’t start from scratch. Our PWA beta, launched on Celo for its mobile-friendly stablecoins and low fees, has already demonstrated viability:

  • 27 waste workers onboarded across urban and peri-urban areas.
  • 6 recycling facilities participating as verification partners.
  • 1.2 tons of waste collected and processed.
  • $350 in stablecoin rewards distributed, directly improving livelihoods.
  • Live beta in 4 countries: Nigeria (Lagos ), Uganda (Kampala), Côte d’Ivoire (Abidjan), and Kenya (Nairobi) with users reporting 20-50% income boosts from rewards.

User feedback highlights ease of use: “Finally, my work is seen and paid fairly,” shared one picker from Nairobi. This beta validates the model’s adoption, economic impact, and technical feasibility, with zero defaults on verifications thanks to community-based checks.

We’re not stopping here data from the beta shows 85% retention rates and growing partnerships, setting the stage for Polkadot-scale expansion.


Why Polkadot? The Ideal Foundation for Scalable ReFi

Celo was perfect for our MVP, offering quick prototyping and mobile accessibility. But as we scale to hundreds of users and integrate with global markets, Polkadot stands out for its unique strengths:

  • Scalability: Parachain architecture handles high transaction volumes without congestion, supporting growth from our current 32 users to continent-wide adoption.

  • Interoperability: XCM allows fluid connections e.g., pulling stablecoin liquidity from Acala , feeding proof-of-waste into carbon-focused parachains like OriginTrail or Energy Web.

  • Composability: AfriCycle’s pallet can integrate with other Polkadot projects, enabling features like NFT-based carbon credits or DeFi lending against recycling collateral.

Technical Architecture: From Beta to Polkadot-Native

Our revenue model blends multiple streams:

Go-To-Market & BD Plan

We’re taking a phased, community-first approach to growth:

  • Phase 1 (now): Strengthen our live beta in Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, and Côte d’Ivoire, onboarding 100+ waste workers through local NGOs and recycling cooperatives.
  • Phase 2: Roll out the Polkadot-native version with simplified wallet UX and local-language education campaigns to ensure inclusivity and ease of use.
  • Phase 3: Deepen integrations with corporate ESG programs and government sustainability initiatives, using AfriCycle data to power transparent impact reporting.

Our BD strategy mixes grassroots engagement with global ReFi collaboration, positioning AfriCycle as the go-to platform for verified circular economy data from Africa.


Partnerships & Network Strength

You’re absolutely right success in ReFi depends on strong partnerships and credible networks.
We currently have 6 confirmed partnerships across 4 African, with several others in progress. These include collaborations with recycling facilities, and local sustainability organizations that help verify waste data, onboard workers, and expand community adoption.

On the blockchain side, we’re already exploring technical collaborations within the Polkadot and ReFi ecosystems for traceability, liquidity, and carbon data interoperability.
AfriCycle is evolving from our Celo-based beta toward a Polkadot-native implementation powered by XCM, ensuring scalability, transparency, and seamless cross-chain connectivity.
