This move allowed Google to separate its core internet business from its more experimental ventures, such as self-driving cars and biotech research. The rename helped clarify the company’s structure and signaled its ambitions beyond just being a search engine.

Andersen Consulting to Accenture: In 2001, Andersen Consulting, which was the consulting arm of accounting firm Arthur Andersen, renamed itself Accenture. This change followed a bitter split from Arthur Andersen and helped establish Accenture as an independent entity. The new name, derived from “accent on the future,” signaled the company’s focus on innovation and technology.

Kentucky Fried Chicken to KFC: In 1991, Kentucky Fried Chicken officially shortened its name to KFC. This decision was driven by a desire to downplay the “fried” aspect of its name as consumers became more health-conscious. Renaming a brand is a significant and often costly undertaking that demands careful consideration. I question the benefit of such a substantial change as renaming Polkadot to JAM in that context, and I don’t think Alphabet and Google is a good example.

If a name change is necessary, opting for something like “DOT” might be more positive. This choice would retain brand recognition while aligning with the concept of coherence and size-synchrony that Gav presents, symbolically reducing the complexity of the polka, to a single dot.
