Hi everyone, I’m a blockchain student currently researching Polkadot, and I’m trying to understand why someone would choose Polkadot over other similar projects. I’d really like to hear from members here about why you personally chose Polkadot and what convinced you from your point of view.
I came out of curiosity, and i stayed for the tech and the philosophy.
IMO Polkadot has the best tech out there and is the closest to the true roots of the web3 philosophy so thats why i stayed instead of going back to Ethereum.
In July 2016 I wrote a blog post that was essentially a wish list for the ideal blockchain technology:

Polkadot is essentially the universe providing me with what I asked for.
Philosophy on the revamped Polkadot website says it all.
One thing that doesn’t get mentioned enough as a ‘pro’ is the shared security model. Not having to bootstrap your own validator set is huge for new projects. The flip side (the ‘con’) is obviously the auction system - it’s a brilliant way to filter for quality, but it definitely sets a high bar for smaller teams just trying to innovate.
The auction model has been gone since late 2024. It was replaced with Agile Coretime.
