Overview

The Polkadot Ecosystem Atlas is a comprehensive portal covering the entire Polkadot ecosystem. Designed to unify, categorize, and contextualize all key elements, resources, and topics within Polkadot, this platform addresses some of the primary challenges faced by the community:

  1. Information Fragmentation: Consolidates hundreds of scattered resources into a single, curated and searchable atlas.
  2. Onboarding Friction: Offers curated pathways for newcomers to easily navigate the ecosystem.
  3. Resource Discovery: Connects developers, users, and projects through an extensive directory.

:o: Updating Daily!

Why a Polkadot Ecosystem Atlas?

For newcomers and even seasoned participants, the Polkadot ecosystem can appear overwhelming. Similar to other blockchain environments, and even more so, it comprises a fragmented landscape of concepts, tools, projects, information sources, and niche communities, often existing in isolation.

Polkadot Ecosystem Atlas managed by Dablock serves as a comprehensive reference portal that functions both as a beginner’s gateway and an extensive content library. By compiling, categorizing, curating, and linking the majority of the ecosystem’s elements, we provide a single, accessible destination that showcases connections, clarifies context, and facilitates intuitive exploration.

5. Ideas and Pathways

Doing this things alone is neither fun nor advantageous ㋛. Building and scaling the Polkadot Ecosystem Atlas is a collaborative effort. Here are some pathways to enhance and expand the project:

  • Open Workgroup Establishment:
Establish an open workgroup among ecosystem contributors to oversee the long-term management, updates, and scaling of the portal, using a DAO governance model. Explore a preliminary Framework & Governance draft, based on the Technical Fellowship structure.

  • Integrating Ambassadors, Creators, and Local Communities:
Align portal management with broader community initiatives by introducing regular child-bounties for specific tasks. This strategy encourages active participation and valuable contributions from diverse community members. A similar approach can be extended to other platforms, such as the Polkadot Wiki, to foster engagement and collaborative development across the ecosystem.

  • Gamification:
Introduce gamified elements to enhance organization, incentivize participation, and scale collaborative workgroups. The Parity Tip Bot and Wagmedia Discord Bot are examples of tools that can help automate these processes by facilitating community management and reward distribution.

F.A.Q.

What about the branding?

The site’s branding, including its logo, is currently under review and may be updated. If there is no consensus within the community, it is highly likely that the official Polkadot logo will replace the current one in the near future.

Is content translated into other languages? Why is that still important? Yes, we are actively working on translating content into multiple languages. Given that the Polkadot ecosystem is global, it is crucial to make this valuable information accessible to as many users as possible. By translating the portal, we aim to foster an inclusive environment and encourage cross-border collaboration.

Currently, the content is available in English and is being translated into Spanish, German, Portuguese, Italian, and French. We are also continuously working on expanding to more languages to reach even broader audiences.

Translating is a very important task that has never been well done before as it is scattered across unrelated individual personal blogs and has no prior context.

Translations should be done in collaboration with local communities and published on reference portals such as the Polkadot Wiki or the portal we are developing with Polkadot Atlas.

By working with local communities and publishing content on reputable platforms like the Polkadot Wiki and the Polkadot Atlas portal, we ensure that the distribution of translated content is well-organized and easily accessible for users. Giving this task true meaning and value.

How can I contribute to the Polkadot Ecosystem Atlas? Contributing to the Atlas is easy! You can submit updates and corrections, suggest new resources, or even translate and localize content. Whether you're a developer, researcher, or just someone passionate about Polkadot, there’s always an opportunity to get involved and start your journey as creator. Visit our GitHub repository for detailed instructions on how to start contributing.
What’s the significance of the 100% open-source nature of the project? Being open-source means that anyone can contribute, improve, or adapt the project as they see fit. It allows for transparency, collaboration, and innovation, which are the core values of the Polkadot ecosystem. By sharing all our code and content, we invite a wider community to participate in the continuous growth of the Atlas, helping ensure that the information remains accurate, up-to-date, and relevant.
How often is the content updated? The content is updated daily. Our goal is to ensure that the information in the Atlas is as current and accurate as possible. As the Polkadot ecosystem evolves, we keep up with the latest projects, resources, and news, and incorporate them into the portal.
Why is the Polkadot Ecosystem Atlas crucial for newcomers? For newcomers, navigating the Polkadot ecosystem can be overwhelming due to its size and complexity. The Atlas serves as a curated, easy-to-navigate resource that simplifies the discovery of key tools, resources, and community initiatives. It helps users understand the relationships between different projects and provides a smooth onboarding experience, allowing them to find relevant information quickly.
What are the key features of the Polkadot Ecosystem Atlas? Some of the key features include a unified resource center for discovering projects, tools, and community initiatives, aggregated media content from events like Sub0 and Decoded, and the latest ecosystem news. Additionally, the portal supports internationalization, making it accessible to a global audience.
What can I expect in the coming months for the project? In the coming months, we are focused on expanding the project’s scope, with particular emphasis on increasing the number of indexed projects, enhancing the user interface, and growing multilingual support. Our goal is to reach 95% content coverage in multiple languages and ensure the portal remains a comprehensive resource for the community.
How does the project plan to involve the community in the long term? We are committed to building a collaborative, community-driven project. Our vision includes integrating ambassadors, creators, and local communities to oversee the portal’s long-term management.
How can I stay updated on project developments? To stay updated, you can follow the GitHub repository, join the weekly community calls, or follow @DablockDAO on X. Additionally, we provide regular progress updates and KPI tracking on our reports page at dablock.com.

From the beautiful book of Kate Crawford “Atlas of AI”:

"An atlas is an unusual type of book. It is a collection of disparate parts, with maps that vary in resolution from a satellite view of the planet to a zoomed-in detail of an archipelago. When you open an atlas, you may be seeking specific information about a particular place—or perhaps you are wandering, following your curiosity, and finding unexpected pathways and new perspectives. As historian of science Lorraine Daston observes, all scientific atlases seek to school the eye, to focus the observer’s attention on particular telling details and significant characteristics. An atlas presents you with a particular viewpoint of the world, with the imprimatur of science—scales and ratios, latitudes and longitudes—and a sense of form and consistency.

Yet an atlas is as much an act of creativity—a subjective, political, and aesthetic intervention—as it is a scientific collection. The French philosopher Georges Didi-Huberman thinks of the atlas as something that inhabits the aesthetic paradigm of the visual and the epistemic paradigm of knowledge. By implicating both, it undermines the idea that science and art are ever completely separate. Instead, an atlas offers us the possibility of rereading the world, linking disparate pieces differently and “reediting and piecing it together again without thinking we are summarizing or exhausting it.”

Perhaps my favorite account of how a cartographic approach can be helpful comes from the physicist and technology critic Ursula Franklin: “Maps represent purposeful endeavors: they are meant to be useful, to assist the traveler and bridge the gap between the known and the as yet unknown; they are testaments of collective knowledge and insight.” Maps, at their best, offer us a compendium of open pathways—shared ways of knowing—that can be mixed and combined to make new interconnections.
